Pop quiz: Why did I audibly gasp, when I saw this GMT-800 Suburban this morning?
Eh?
UPDATE:
It has QUADRASTEER!!! If this thing turns out to be a regular in the neighborhood, I’m going to leave a note asking to buy it.
S65-something something was the earliest time-stamp to guess it. Congratulations, you’ve won one dozen internets.

Quadrasteer?

Suburban 2500? Cab lights?
![]() 10/17/2016 at 09:23 |

It is a 2500, and there are a couple lights there that are clues, but those aren’t the reason.

Is it the exceedingly-rare fleet-only Duramax?

YES!

No, but I do like them. It’s been revealed now. Those rear fender flares with the marker lights on them let us know that this Suburban has Quadrasteer 4-wheel steering.

hot buy it now

I probably would have crashed my truck if it was a Duramax Suburban. I did see a Duramax Colorado on the way to work though.

Maybe it’s the angle, but the haunches aren’t as much of a dead giveaway as they are on the Sierra. You can spot those from a mile away.
![]() 10/17/2016 at 10:12 |

It’s definitely much more subtle on the Suburbans. On the Sierras it’s a whole different rear fender, and it is much more pronounced, but on the Suburbans it’s just that bit fatter flare with the marker lights.

There’s no for sale sign on it, but I’m considering leaving a note.

Damn I love quadrasteer trucks. Here’s a vintage commercial of the truck version:

Yes, but I gasped because it has Quadrasteer!
![]() 10/17/2016 at 10:17 |

I remember that one!
A dream truck would be an ‘02 Silverado crew cab, 8' bed, with a Duramax and Quadrasteer. Followed shortly by a 2500 Suburban with quadrasteer. It’s a shame they never put the Duramax in those.

Did I tell you I work with a guy with a gmt800 duraburb?
![]() 10/17/2016 at 10:26 |

Supposedly there are companies that will take the truck’s Duramax and Allison transmission and insert that in a 2500 Suburban with the big block and matching Allison (Don’t know if they support it with a 4L60 equipped truck).
It requires a new subframe since the truck’s Allison is larger, but considering the crazy things people have to do with some swaps, it’s relatively tame.

loves it, he says he has 2 ecus (not sure if he means two literal computers or 2 tunes) one that returns mid 20's on the highway and one that pulls like crazy. Looks good and sounds good too.

Very cool. That’s one of the things I’d get/build if I came into big money (read: never gonna happen, but I can dream).

When I worked at Chick-Fil-A, a guy often came through the drive thru with a Duramax Suburban with Quadrasteer. Black on black. Owner was an unusual gentleman, but he was nice. Really girthy moustache. Always ordered a CFA deluxe meal with a large Diet Dr. Pepper. He said that he has turned down offers of 40 grand.
![]() 10/17/2016 at 13:19 |
|
WOW! $40k is a lotta chedda for an old Suburban, but I can see why he passed. What in the world would he replace it with?
![]() 10/17/2016 at 13:49 |
|
GM still makes the Suburban 2500 for fleet purposes, but ***if*** one of those comes up for market, it’s hovering around the $70,000 mark.
![]() 10/17/2016 at 13:52 |

Exactly, and no Quadrasteer.

Once upon a time an ‘03 Sierra 1500 HD with the 6.0L and crew cab sat in my driveway. It was a dream truck, and I’m not a truck person.
![]() 10/17/2016 at 16:33 |
|
Oh, a 1500HD! I thought they were silly at the time, but honestly if they made one again, it would be the perfect capacity for what I want to do. I can’t bear to sell my ‘06 Sierra Crew cab 1500, it’s been too good to me since I bought it new (for dirt cheap). Unfortunately the 4.8 engine and 3:20 gears limit it’s towing capacity to 5700 pounds, and that’s been a challenge to find a camper big enough for my family to travel in, but small and light enough for me to tow it. I had a light enough camper for a couple years, but it was heavy enough, and put enough aerodymamic drag on the truck, that I rarely could get into overdrive, and any semblance of a “grade” or a head wind would make it downshift into second and zing the motor.
![]() 10/17/2016 at 20:29 |

Yeah the 6.0 was awesome. I frequently, 5 days a week, towed a 6000lb trailer and never needed more power. Only managed 8-12mpg towing, but that’s a minor trade off for how effortless it was.
![]() 10/17/2016 at 20:45 |
|
That’s not bad. I got between 8-11 mpg towing a 4500 pound camper around the largely flat Midwest, and it was not effortless!
![]() 10/17/2016 at 20:48 |
|
Fair enough. But it’s bad compared to the dmax. And everyone else in this thread is going nuts over that thing.
![]() 10/17/2016 at 20:51 |
|
Yeah, the Duramax probably about doubles that mileage.
I saw a Duramax Colorado on the way to work today. I’m very interested in one of those, I just wish they were available with a bench seat.
![]() 10/17/2016 at 21:04 |
|
I actually test drive a dmax when I was looking at mine. The power was great and the mileage was enticing, but the turbo was so damn loud and never ever shut up and the truck cost so much more that I couldn’t justify it.
There’s a lot of features that new trucks should be offered with and without.
![]() 10/17/2016 at 21:57 |
|
Yeah, you really have to put on a lot of miles to make that diesel pay off. They’re crazy expensive.
I’ve said it over and over again, the first manufacturer that grows the stones to offer a new truck with two plaid bench seats, gets my money.

So... A brand new version of a something like an old Cheyenne pickup.
![]() 10/17/2016 at 23:24 |

Precisely.
![]() 10/17/2016 at 23:27 |

I could go for that. But I expect it to smell like an old Cheyenne.

Don’t worry, the out gassing of the vinyl floor covering will make sure of it.
